Around the westernmost tip of the island, in the almost virgin Guanahacabibes Peninsula (a Biosphere Reserve since 1987), in the province of Pinar del Rio, rises Villa Cabo San Antonio with its 16 log cabins, lovely beach, unique flora and fauna.
Though only some 350 km away from Havana it takes forever to get there. Roads are not exactly in perfect condition, there aren’t enough signs either, and the last 60 km or so are driven through the nature reserve of Cabo San Antonio, maybe stopping for large iguanas that are sunbathing in the middle of the road. Once you arrive though, if you are a nature lover, you will adore the place!
It is almost totally secluded, no other hotels or buildings, only a lighthouse 3 km away and Marina Cabo San Antonio, 4 km from the hotel and featuring a diving center, protected docking, fuel and water supply for vessels; a shop, snack-bar and medical post.
There are 27 diving places, but even for those who don’t dive there’s the beautiful and almost deserted beach, right in front of the hotel, with tropical fish and a coral reef about 100 m out, easy snorkeling. There are also wild pigs around the beach, crabs, jutías (tree rats). And sunsets are quite spectacular!
Cabins are spacious, air conditioned, with large beds, truly cozy and very clean. Some have sea views.
Food is nothing to write home about + a bit pricey, but the staff, genuinely friendly and caring, compensates for this.
You might want to pack some snacks + insect repellent because there are mosquitoes and other bugs! And bring along music, games…there is no entertainment whatsoever! Even if one wants to go bird watching or trekking it might be best to choose Hotel Maria La Gorda, outside the park and providing more excursions and services.
This gem for nature lovers is ideal on a long holiday in Cuba (if you are going for a few days only it is too far!). We also recommend going by car or else you will be pretty stuck. And please remember supplies are a problem; do not expect a large variety of food or any luxuries.
Medical Services: First aid and medical services specialized in underwater diseases are provided in Marina Cabo San Antonio round the clock. In case of accident the client is air-transported to the nearest hyperbaric chamber (45 min, Naval Hospital in Havana).
