At the end of the Baracoa seawall lies a park that bears the name of Christopher Columbus owing to the statue featured in it. The man known as the discoverer of America reached these lands later occupied by a settlement on the 27th of November, in 1492. The statue was hewn out of a giant stump of wood. It stands in the vicinity of the fort Matachín, which currently operates as the city museum.
