Plaza del Carmen

This is one of the most picturesque places in the historical city center with an antiquity of over 200 years. Popularly known as the Plaza del Gallo (Rooster) it is totally paved with the old cobblestones exquisitely evocative of the days bygone. In the afternoons one can watch scores of pigeons fluttering about the place expecting to be fed by the passersby.

The visitor is drawn to several curious and original statues reminiscent of autochthonous personages of the idiosyncrasies of Cuban streets both past and present: the water vendor with his vessels, the newspaper lector, the gossipers and the lovebirds.

It is bounded by equally venerable constructions like a former women’s hospital, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and the Monastery of the Ursulines.
