Las Tunas & Covarrubias

Las Tunas, founded in 1796, with a population of 527 891 inhabitants, is the capital of the province of the same name. The province is almost plain except for some small isolated hills.

Las Tunas is not a big city and you can visit the most interesting places in a couple of days. It is common to see some sculptures all over the city; that is the reason why Las Tunas is known as ¨ the city of sculptures¨.

The historical center of the city has a system of parks and plazas that are interesting to visit like the Plaza Martiana, built in 1995, the Plaza Cultural, the Antonio Maceo park ( 1912) and the Vicente García park ( 1915).

To the north, Las Tunas and its neighbour city, Holguin, offer an ensemble of excellent beaches. Located in Las Tunas, is a beautiful tourist spot called the "Polo Turístico Covarrubias". Covarrubias is about 10 km long and includes some beautiful beaches including the Playa Blanche, Playa Bonita, Playa Covarrubias, Playa Malagueta, Real and Rocosa beaches. There are other beaches on the coast , about 30 of them, some are directly by the coast at open sea, others at the interior of the Puerto Padre, Chaparra and Malagueta bays and are interesting for their flora and fauna.

From Covarrubias you can visit Puerto Padre, a warm village at the bay of the same name. In the area are several sugar mills that can be visited by taking tours offered from the beach. In these excursions you learn about the process of sugar production in Cuba and you visit the La Loma (The Hill) Fortress, built during colonial times and located on the highest part of the city.
