Iglesia del Santo Cristo

The church Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje (Holy Christ of the Good Journey) dates from the first decades of the XVIII century at what time it was consecrated, however, its original appearance was markedly different from its current aspect, for it wasn’t until 1840 that a third nave was added to one its sides, in addition to the now distinctive tall tower.

It is the only church in Cuba that conserves a cemetery in its patio, as well as pantheons and vaults lining its walls; the immense majority of Cuban churches had abolished interments within their premises since the XVIII century and consequently any vestige of the ancient practices disappeared over time from these public structures.
