Plaza de San Francisco de Asis

The Plaza de San Francisco is located in the intersection of Oficios and Amargura streets, next to Havana Bay. It is a beautiful public place that inherited its name in the XVI Century from the Franciscan church-convent that still stands in one of its sides with its imposing presence.

This square is also popularly known with the name of “Plaza de las palomas”. In its centre it stands the Fuente de los Leones, a beautiful fountain carved on Carrara marble during the middle of the XIX century, by the Italian Giusseppe Gaggini. At the northern end of the square it is located the Lonja del Comercio, a center built at the beginning of the XX Century to rule the commercial transactions of the city.

In front of the square, where the Spanish galleons used to anchor, it is located nowadays the international cruiser terminal.

The inside of the convent has been distributed as a hall for chamber music concerts and other spaces dedicated to expose relics of colonial times on the island.
