Capitol Building

The National Capitol is a marvelous work of engineering inaugurated in 1929 at the cost of 17 millions pesos of the time and after just 3 years of labor.

Its dome is especially remarkable and reminiscent of San Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The interiors are highly noteworthy for the luxury and fine taste invested in their decoration. Especially commendable are the frescos adorning the ceilings of the Hall of the Lost Steps, the space that immediately welcomes visitors as they leave behind the long flight of steps leading up to the entrance of the building.

The Capitol is the second highest point of the city, surpassed only by the Monument to José Martí in the Revolution Square.

It was built to house the two chambers of the nation’s Congress, which held session until 1959, in the two hemicycles situated at the opposite extremes of the edifice.
