Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta

The Castle of San Salvador de la Punta is located at the entrance of the bay of Havana. It was, together with the Castle of Los Tres Reyes del Morro and the Castle of La Real Fuerza, an integral part of the town’s defensive system during the period encompassing the XVI and XVIII centuries.

The fortress was inaugurated in 1589 right across from the Morro Castle, allowing the two fortresses to trap invaders in crossfire. A huge chain would be hung between them every night to safeguard the port of Havana.

Following an extensive restoration in the decade of the 1990s, the Museum de San Salvador de la Punta was established and opened to the public exhibiting relics retrieved from ships sunken in colonial times; there are hundreds of remains of old shipwrecks sitting submerged just off the coasts of Cuba.
