Parra Cross

Preserved for over 500 years in the interior of the Baracoa parochial church, this is the most ancient colonial relic one might find in the entire American continent. It was carved and then thrust into Baracoa ground by Christopher Columbus in 1492, a practice oft repeated by the Great Admiral wherever he set foot on for the first time, amounting to 29 other sites in Latin America.

In the early days of the conquest, during the organizing labors that would derive in the foundation and the onset of evangelization in the locality, the hosts of Diego Velazquez encountered a cross covered by the natural undergrowth of the zone, which was at the time interpreted as a divine sign of approval for the missions carried out by the Spaniards in this occupied territory.
