Revolution Square

This is the main and major public square in the city of Holguín thanks to its capacity to gather around 300000 persons standing. It was built in 1979 and was baptized with the name of the Major General Calixto García Iñíguez, in honor of the principal independence leader born of the province, who was a general in the three wars and lead the combat actions of the Cubans that aided the taking of Santiago de Cuba by the troops of the United States in the Hispano-American War.

On site one can observe an architectural and sculptural complex where the mortal remains of the Cuban General lie next to his mother’s, who was also a patriot renowned among locals.

An eye-catching feature in the design of the site is surely the presence of seventeen royal palms planted in tribute of the 18 generals hailing from Holguín who fought in the three wars of independence.
