Parque Histórico de San Juan

The San Juan Historical Park is located west of the City of Santiago de Cuba on an elevation that gave it its name. The site has a significant relevance in the island’s history, for it was there where the final battle of the Spanish-Cuban War took place in 1898, resulting in the end of Spanish domination. It pays homage to the men who fell in the course of that action. At the top of the hill sits a sentry box surrounded by cannons and artillery elements, a bronze sculpture in remembrance of the Victorious Mambí (Cuban independence combatants), and the Monuments to the Unknown North American and Spanish Soldier. Large books with the names of those who took part in the actions surround a ceiba tree known as the Tree of Peace, marking the spot where the capitulation of Santiago de Cuba to U.S. troops was effected.
