Plaza Martiana

Founded as recently as 1995, this square makes for a curious site in the Tunas capital where astronomy meets national history thanks to a project linking the movement of the sun and the life of José Martí: the Cuban national hero. In the plaza two elements chiefly stand out over all the rest: a sundial and a bust of Martí. The important dates connected to the life of the principal leader of the independence movement are marked by means of shadows cast by the sun on the clock-plate.

On the 19th of May, the date marked by the fall in combat of the leader, it is astounding to watch how approximately at the hour known to be the time of his death, a ray of sun falls directly on one side of the face of Martí’s bust.
