Finca Vigia - Hemingway´s Home in Havana

Some 30 minutes away from the city center, in the San Francisco de Paula district, one finds the former property of the famous North American writer Ernest Hemingway.

The large country estate is enclosed by fruit trees that hem in the country mansion where the Nobel Prize for Literature winner dwelled in the decades 40 and 50 of the past century. The property is preserved in the exact same manner the writer left it to travel to the United States in the early 60s, albeit with the intention of a quick return. It is said that the State Department “suggested” he shouldn’t return to a country that was undergoing a revolutionary social process.

The museum displays many of the writer’s personal belongings such as weapons and hunting trophies, the whole book collection from his personal library, and the typing machine he used to bring into being works like “For whom the bells toll” and “The Old Man and the Sea”.

At the back of the swimming pool area rests “El Pilar”, the magnificent fishing boat he used to give free rein to his passion for deep-sea fishing.

Hours: open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00h to 17:00h and on Sundays from 9:00h to 12:30h.
