Hotel Jagua rises in the residential area of Punta Gorda, a lovely neighborhood that’s located only a short drive from Cienfuegos’ city center; one of the best areas of the city due to the proximity of the sea, the nice layout of its streets, its picturesque Malecón (seaside promenade and avenue) and lovely architecture of its houses, mostly from the 1950’s.
The Jagua, also built during those years and conceived as a casino hotel -the Revolution triumphed on January 1, 1959 so it never served this purpose-, features the 50’s typical architecture, a vast lobby, nice swimming pool that overlooks the bay, spacious rooms (149 in total) offering beautiful panoramic views of the sea and the Moorish Palacio del Valle, one of the city’s main attractions which was the residence of a sugar magnate from the 20's, now a restaurant and bar.
Unfortunately, Jagua doesn’t offer its visitors much more than a great location and wonderful views. Though the hotel chain ranks it as 4 star, most visitors would not agree and 4* services and facilities should not be expected. Rooms and bathrooms need maintenance and up grading; the pool could be great but it’s not; elevators do not always work; the staff could definitely be more helpful...
This said, if one is not expecting a lot and gets lucky with the room, it could be an Ok place to lodge a couple of nights in this lovely city.
