Camaguey's Gran Hotel by Melia stands in a very centric position by the old quarter of the city, where the historic centre is. It's a restored building from 1939, of significant architectural importance and a nice colonial look.
For many years the best hotel in the city, it hosted international celebrities like the American writer Ernest Hemingway, the Mexicans Jorge Negrete and Mario Moreno (Cantinflas) as well as Cuba's National Poet Nicolás Guillén, prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, singer Rita Montaner... among others.
It still retains part of its old charm and grandeur, starting with the lobby and the original elevator built of precious wood...but it hasn't been updated in years and it is evident the moment you walk in.
The old style furniture, dark antique woodworks, as in its piano bar, and all the other original features are a big compensation factor, together with its location on the main pedestrian shopping street of Camaguey, within walking distance to practically everything.
Rooms are not really spacious and also look a bit tired, but are comfortable, with modest yet handsome furnishing and adequate bathrooms. Many feature a balcony that open to really nice view of the city. (These rooms are larger and brighter while the interior ones are quieter).
A lively café and snack bar faces onto the street and the more elegant rooftop restaurant provides buffet and a la carte options with panoramic views of the city. Also the 6th floor terrace offers beautiful views of the city and night entertainment with live music.
The small mezzanine courtyard features a small swimming-pool where some nights there is a synchronised swimming show.
