Mural of Prehistory

This is perhaps the best-known image of the entire Viñales Valley due to the large amount of visitors (over 4000 a month) passing through to behold it on their tour of this Natural Park in the province of Pinar del Río. It is a gigantic and colorful mural of 120 meters in height and 180m wide. Painted on the slope of one of the Mogotes (flat-topped limestone elevations) so characteristic of the valley rock, the mural depicts the biological evolution of the Sierra de los Órganos by means of human figures, dinosaurs and other animals that roamed this region of the island in prehistoric times. It was created in 1959 by painter and scientist Leovigildo González with the help of some farmers from the area. The site lies 4 km away from the town of Viñales.
