Attractions in Villa Clara

Remedios

Located in the northeast of the province of Villa Clara, it was founded in 1513 by Spanish colonizers.

In 1980 its historical center was declared National Monument, and there, visitors can delight in various examples of very well preserved XVII century Spanish architecture.

Its main attraction is the Major Church "San Juan Bautista" with its splendid gold plated altars. These altars and other art works remained camouflaged under coats of paint for several centuries, so as to prevent them from being looted by pirates. Their rediscovery occurred during the decades of the 40s and 50s of this past century.

Also very picturesque to the eyes of a tourist are the famous “Parrandas Remedianas” (Remedios Revelries): popular revels organized annually halfway through the month of December where the entire population divides into two great opposing teams, the sparrow hawks and the roosters. The climax of the festivities arrives on the last day when both sides vie to win the contest for the best ornamented floats and fireworks displays. The fiesta begins at 5 in the afternoon and the celebration doesn’t stop until dawn.
